across new york and long island, across the connecticut sound and really heavy downpours into boston and drive a little further north and it's all snow. that combined with strong wind is making for a very messy day today. so many people are out and about, trying to enjoy holiday time or maybe just heading back to work or to the stores to return gifts. but unfortunately we're seeing heavy downpours into bridgeport, connecticut and once you start heading to upstate new york, it's accumulation. we're talking about a foot or more for upstate new york, 3 to 6 for places like massachusetts, worcester and the berkshires. the pocono mountains will see about 6 inches of snow and into northwestern new jersey you're still looking at snow as well. this is a strong area of low pressure, it will work its way across the northeast. the cold air coming in behind it will help enhance the heaviest snow across the great lakes and extreme northern new england. we're also experiencing some bitterly cold temperatures right here in the south. this morning it's 35 in atlanta, 33 in birmingham. the cold air i

because it's intensifying following the connecticut school shooting massacre. the nra's president wayne lapierre went on nbc's "meet the press" this weekend saying call him crazy for wanting to put armed security officers in schools. he doesn't mind. nra president david kean told cbs' "face the nation," a ban on assault weapons won't stop mass killings. >> we debated this before. we had a so-called assault weapons ban for ten years. we had what senator feinstein is suggesting. it was allowed to expire. the fbi, the justice department, and others who studied it said it made no difference. >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. >> despite the national rifle association's opposition to any new gun laws, president obama insists an action is not an option when it comes to protecting children. while democrats and republicans are upset over the massacre in newtown, the country remains polarized on the issue of gun control. cnn's senior congressional correspondent dana bash is in washington. we know that some law

in this town needs right now. poppy harlow, cnn, newtown, connecticut. >> christmas movies to escape. the wave of funerals for the first graders in tiny caskets has sparked calls for change. a father and public coach made this emotional plea for everyone's help to protect his two little girls from tragedies like the we saw in newtown. he is the public coach pat kelsey and said the country needs to step up right now. >> i will walk into my house up stairs and into two pink rooms. with a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old laying in that pink room with a bunch of teddy bears in that room and give them the biggest hug and kiss i have ever given them. there is 20 families in newtown, connecticut that walk into a pink room with teddy bears with nobody laying in those beds. it's tragic. this country has got issues. is it a gun issue or mental health issue or a society that lost the understanding that decent human values are president. i didn't vote for president obama, but you know what, he's my period and he's my leader and need him to step up. mr. boehner, he's a cincinnati guy. he needs to step up. paren

morning. are you with us? last chance. we will move on to doreen in connecticut. caller: i'm a small business owner. host: what kind of business? caller: i do alterations. in the evening return our business into a zumba class for ladies. my daughter and i seem to be doing pretty good. the ladies we hire as seamstresses are independent contractors. these are skills they got from their parents who taught them how to sew. we just went and put out advertising saying we needed seamstresses and we got six good seamstresses. we pay them enough that they can get their own health-insurance and they seem to be doing pretty well. i don't think that giving people the assistance in helping to further their endeavors is a bad thing. i think people who tried to stop people from making it further, they are just being selfish, because you can help individuals if they have skills. they don't have to have a college education to have certain skills. you can use those skills to your advantage and still help them along the way. they can get thrown help insurance. small businesses really are not hurting in
